  • Vallone's Bill Phases Out Solid Security Roll-Down Gates

Vallone sponsors first-of-its-kind legislation in the nation to phase out Roll-down security gates. We are now giving business owners a new tool to improve their communities at their own pace."

COMMUNITY NEWS FROM C.M. VALLONE (FEBRUARY 2010)

In the past month, Council Member Peter F. Vallone Jr. tackled some of the city’s big issues – oversaturation of power plants in Queens, the pending terror trials in NYC and Amtrak’s infrastructural problems.

Poletti Power Plant Closes

Eight years after Vallone and members of environmental group C.H.O.K.E. initiated a lawsuit to shut down the city’s most polluted power plant, the New York Power Authority closed down the 885-Megawatt (MW) Charles Poletti Power Project in Astoria on January 31, 2010.

“This is a major victory, not only for Western Queens, which has been over-saturated with power plants for many years, but for the entire city,” Vallone said.

Amtrak Removes Scaffolding from 31st Street Train Overpass – Concluding Years of Repairs and Delays

Since taking office in 2002, Vallone has worked with Amtrak on a number of issues, including leaking water dripping from the trestle, pieces of concrete nearly striking pedestrians and dangerous icing conditions.  Construction crews have taken down scaffolding that has surrounded the 31st Street Amtrak train viaduct for over two years, ending an extensive repair and maintenance project.

“The scaffolding, although necessary, made the area unattractive, took many of our limited parking spaces and served as a constant reminder that this project seemed to have no end in sight,” Vallone said.

Vallone Blasts Terror Trials
As the first Democrat to oppose holding a terror trial in NYC, Vallone has worked as Public Safety Chair to garner support to move the trial and is pleased to finally be joined by so many fellow Electeds.

“Every New York elected official who supported the poor decision to hold the trial in Lower Manhattan should have, at a minimum, ensured that the federal government paid for it. It was clear from the start - the cost of protecting our citizens from the increased risks would be exorbitant. Now, our senators should stand with our mayor in supporting a different location,” Vallone said after the mayor came out in support of his position.
