Peter on the Issues: Schools

Schools are the ships that carry our children into their promising futures. Because of schools' roles, Vallone believes each school should be a bastion of security in sometimes dangerous waters of their lives. He has put security cameras outside every public school and has written legislation to bring them to every additional school in the city. He has protected our students by forcing cell phone companies to remove potentially hazardous transmission towers from buildings adjacent to local schools, becoming a world wide leader in the irresponsible placement of cellular technology. Vallone is a sponsor of legislation which requires the New York City Department of Education to provide security measures for non-public schools, which would allow school children to carry cellular phones to and from school for safety purposes. Vallone has worked to keep sexual predators far away from school grounds and has notified parents about the presence of these criminals. In addition to saftey, he has given millions of dollars to local schools to improve facilities, install computers and ensure that after-school programming serves children. Vallone, valuing the education that our schools provide, has negotiated smaller class sizes and experimental programs, such as an all girls' school in his district. In the face of every child, Vallone sees his two young daughters – both promising public school students – making him strive to push for academic achievement for any willing child in New York City.
